Malta Scoops Up Gold Award at Leading Industry Convention

A night of glittering awards and accolades, the annual M&IT awards was held of Friday 3rd March and invited over 1,200 of the UK’s leading experts and industry professionals in the MICE market.

Considered to be the UK Conventions industry’s premier event of the year, Conventions Malta were up against stiff competition in the best Overseas Convention Bureau category including Dubai Business Events, The Hague Convention Bureau, Rotterdam Partners, Monaco Tourism Authority and Business Events Canada. But after receiving a democratic vote by around 6,000 customers, Conventions Malta scooped up the award for the very first time in its history.

A win for both the Malta and UK team, Peter Vella, Director UK & Ireland for the Malta Tourism Authority, said ‘Winning this award is an amazing achievement. Special credit must go to Nic Sancho who leads the MICE team in London. The impact that he has had since joining us just over a year ago has been enormous’. Following on from Peter’s statement, Paul Bugeja, CEO for the Malta Tourism Authority which also manages Conventions Malta was delighted with the success saying ‘I am grateful to the team in London for all their hard work and dedication, as well as the very professional team here in Malta who have worked tirelessly to relaunch and rebrand Conventions Malta over the past year’.

The success of this new win for Conventions Malta follows on from the MTA London Office collecting the award for the Best Tourist Board of the Year at the UK TTG Awards in September 2016. A double hit of industry achievements, it is believed that no other destination has ever held both awards simultaneously.

Looking ahead, Malta has an exciting future, particularly with the announcement of its capital city Valletta as the European Capital of Culture 2018. With new developments, hotels, and attractions popping up across the Mediterranean island, the MTA and Conventions Malta are hopeful for more awards to add to their increasing collection.
